Clean Air Act 1993
The Clean Air Act of 1993 provides the current legislative framework of controls to local authorities who may use the act to declare all or part of an area to be a 'smoke control' areas.
Under the act, it is an offence to allow a building chimney, fixed boiler, or furnace to emit smoke if it is within a 'designated smoke control area'. The legislation also stipulates an offence where 'unauthorised fuel' is used in these controlled areas (unless this is exempted).
Fines for breach can be up to £1000. Contact Local Authorities for details of local smoke control areas and for details of authorised fuels/appliances.
